Position Description:  Special Education Teacher

Position Goal:  The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction/modified Massachusetts Frameworks curriculum to special education students within the regular education classroom and learning labs. The teacher acts as a liaison between the general education teachers. Communication with parents and general education staff is essential to the Special Services program. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Appropriate MA DESE teacher certification
  • Effective communication skills

 

Reports to: Principal and Administrator of Student Services

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Implement the program developed by the evaluation team.
  2. Responsible for planning a school program responsive to the individual student's needs.
  3. Provide individual and small-group instruction to students as stated on their IEPs.
  4. Serves as a member of the teacher support team and Evaluation Team
  5. Administer tests and analyze results.
  6. Plam curriculum modifications.
  7. Refer students for additional services.
  8. Supervise special education aides.
  9. Serve as a consultant for students who have special services.
  10. Communicate with parents.
  11. Attend conferences and workshops when appropriate.
  12. Observe students in their general education classroom.
  13. Follow the procedures that have been established for the health. safety, and security of students.
  14. Achieve an in-depth understanding of physical, social, intellectual, and emotional characteristics (in a growth context) of the age group of the students in his/her classroom.
  15. Help students select and use appropriate learning materials. and resources.
  16. Establish and maintain a stimulating, attractive environment for learning, using varied techniques and groupings of students as appropriate.
  17. Help student grow in their ability to work with others in classroom and school situations.
  18. Counsel and advise students as they face the normal problems of the classroom and school. Be perceptive in knowing when to refer students to others when the problems are beyond their own level of professional competence.
